Save the Golfo Dulce from the Tuna Farms

Governmental approval for a tuna farm project at the mouth of Costa Rica’s Golfo Dulce – located along the country’s remote southern Pacific coast – threatens the area’s water quality, local economic resources, and natural stocks of tropical Pacific tuna. On February 16th 2009 the National Technical Environmental Secretary (SETENA) rejected an appeal for annulment, deciding instead to go ahead with the apporval od the Tuna Farm in Golfito. However, this decision has come without clearing up the issues stated in the Environmental Impact Assessement.

Beyond Blue has dedicated an issue to the controversial topic of aquaculture in our August minimag available at www.beyondbluemag.com. Our expose feature from Andy Bystrom investigates the issues of the Tuna Farm proposal in Costa Rica. If you would like to get involved with the campaign to stop tuna farming in Costa Rica please visit www.pretoma.org or email andy@pretoma.org for more information.

Those who would like to get involved in Costa Rica's "No Tuna Farms" campaign are encouraged to sign the online petition on the Pretoma link above. I have also posted additional information on this tuna farm project, including threats to the water quality at some of the country's world renowned surfing destinations, on the Costa Rican Conservation Network's blog available at: http://costaricanconservationnetwork.wordpress.com/

Please be a part of the solution!!
Thanks,

Andy
